Local authorities have the authority to impose fines of up to £5,000 when landlords fail to adhere to a remedial notice.

Since 2015, it has been a legal requirement in the private rented sector for landlords to have at least one smoke alarm installed on each storey of their properties with living accommodation. It is now a legal mandate to have carbon monoxide alarms not only in rooms with fixed combustion appliances but also in rooms housing a gas boiler.
